50/90 2009 Highlights
50/90 stands for 50 songs in 90 days. This is an offshoot of February Album Writing Month (fawm.org). The challenge is simple - write 50 songs in 90 days. The recording is optional - but I enjoy doing that. The 90 days begins when July 4th begins on the globe and ends when October 1st ends on the globe. I posted my first song on July 12th and posted my last in the wee hours of local October 2nd. This album is a collection of what I think are some of my best, most interesting, or best received songs of the 50/90.
You can hear my entire output here:
Whatever Happened to the Killer Bees?
I wrote this after working in the yard near some flowers that had a few bees on them. The bees did not swarm and chase me down the street.
Recorded on a handheld recorder - hence the extra lo-fi.

9/11 Was an Inside Job
I wrote this for Songfight!

Anything Can Happen (At Any Time)
I've had this song in mind for awhile. I do live under an approach path to John Wayne airport and sometimes the planes do come in low - these days it can make the heart beat slightly faster. Everything in the song is true. Written on a songwriter's retreat hike at Arrowbear music camp around August 5th, 2009. Recorded after I got home.

Lights Go Down
I solicited song ideas from facebook, a good friend of mine who is a librarian but cellist in a rock band at night suggested I write about a librarian who moonlights as a cellist in a rockband. I liked the result.

Inspired by my family's vacation to Sequioa and King's Canyon this summer. It hearkens to an older fashion, hence the attempt at Pete Seeger-esque folk.

The Old Man
Lyrics are by a fellow songwriter working on the challenge, we had discussed collaborating and based on that he wrote these lyrics with me in mind to write the music and sing it.

A Moment Shared
Inspired by the bumper-to-bumper news coverage surrounding the death of Ted Kennedy and the memorials that followed. As I was watching some of it my kid said, "I'm going in the other room to watch cartoons," which reminded me of my brothers.

Not Like the Sky
My wife suggested I write some lullabyes. So I wrote this one. In summer the girls go to bed just as the sun sets.

If Jesus Came Back Today
Kinda speaks for itself. Inspired by another Jesus themed song on 50/90 that I think was inspired by a challenge to write christian rock songs. Needless to say, this is NOT a christian rock song.

Ballad of a Lost Balloon
I thought of this while attending the Orange International Street Fair. I must have seen a rogue balloon in the sky. I had also been waiting for a chance to write a song on this borrowed 12-string I have around. First song I have ever written especially with a 12-string in mind.

I think this speaks pretty well for itself.
September 15, 2009
The first of a set of songs I wrote based on days of the week. I also think this one is the most poetic.

One More Song
Written and recorded the last night of 50/90. Hopefully ambiguous enough to be about any of the 3 ladies in my family.
